A Journey into Ancient Time: The Gezer Calendar

Hello everyone, and thank you for taking the time to look at my 3D model of the Gezer Calendar. This is not just a block of limestone; it’s one of the earliest known examples of ancient Hebrew writing, dating back to the 10th century BCE.

Discovered in 1908 at the ancient city of Gezer, near Jerusalem, this small tablet is believed to be a schoolboy’s exercise or a farmer’s almanac. It divides the year into periods based on agricultural cycles, offering a rare glimpse into daily life in the time of King Solomon.

The calendar is organized by a series of months and the farming activities that took place during them. These include:

  • Two months of ingathering
  • Two months of sowing
  • Two months of late planting
  • A month of hoeing flax
  • A month of barley harvest
  • A month of all-important harvest
  • Two months of pruning vines
  • A month of summer fruit
  • Abiyah

My 3D model, meticulously crafted, aims to highlight the texture of the original stone and the details of its seven lines of inscription. It allows us to visualize this precious artifact in a new way, appreciating its historical and linguistic significance.

By studying this model, we can better understand the agricultural calendar that governed the lives of ancient people in this region and see the origins of written Hebrew.

The following illustration will help you understand better the relation between Gezer calendar and the agricultural year in Israel.
